Valtra´s Dual Fuel tractor provides a practical way to cut down greenhouse gas emis­sions in agriculture and municipality services, by replacing diesel fuel by more envi­ronmental friendly natural gas.

Valtra Dual Fuel tractors can run on either natural gas or upgraded traffic quality biogas and on diesel. In Valtra Dual Fuel tractors a standard AGCO Power diesel engine is converted to use two types of fuel. The majority, up to 83 % of the power is generated by methane from natural gas or upgraded biogas and a minor part by diesel fuel to ignite the gas- air mixture according to the diesel process.

Valtra Duel Fuel is available with Valtra N Series HiTech and HiTech 5 models N103.4, N113 and N123.

No compromises in performance

The use and performance of Valtra Dual Fuel tractors are equal to a standard die­sel tractor. In the Dual Fuel engine the gas is ignited by injecting a small amount of die­sel fuel.

For precise and efficient fuel injection there is an intake manifold with integrat­ed electronic gas injectors and a gas common rail operating parallel to the standard diesel injection. To meet the current emission limits the tractor has a model specified system (including oxidation catalyst) for diesel and gas emission reduction. Engine operations and emission reduction systems for diesel and dual fuel are combined by a common control system with electronic control units for both fuels and linked to the tractor control system.

The gas tanks are of durable composite material and they are located below the cab floor level, not influencing the centre of grav­ity, not disturbing the visibility, ground clearance or use of important equipment like front loader. The gas tank capacity is 192 litres and the maximum fill up pressure is 200 bar. This basic gas tank capacity allows working approximately four hours but it is possible to mount additional tanks for example as extra weight in front of the trac­tor. The diesel tank volume is the same as on a regular tractor. The engine can switch automatically to run with diesel fuel only if gas is not available.

Technical details

Diesel system: original common rail injection

Gas system: three gas cylinders, made of composite material, max. pressure 200 bar, volume 64 litres each, total volume 192 litres (equals 35 l diesel fuel)

High pressure circuit with four electromagnetic and manual valves, closed automatically when the engine is stopped, manometer, NGV-1 connector for gas filling, electromagnetic lock-off valve

Low pressure circuit with pressure regulator reducing the pressure to approx. 3.5 bar, filter and gas common rail injecting gas to every cylinder

Installation of gas components has been made according to the European vehicle regulations ECE R110 and R115.

Electronic control unit optimises the amount of gas in relation with the power requirement and driving situation.

Exhaust system is fitted with Ecocat catalyst in order to eliminate hydrocarbons and methane.

Gas quality: Valtra’s Dual Fuel system has been designed to use traffic quality natural gas and upgraded biogas which is equal to traffic quality natural gas. This makes it possible to use both fuels as a replacement for each other and also mix them in gas grids etc. The methane content of traffic quality biogas should be around 95 % (+/- 2 %). Meeting the homologation and type approval regulations require standardised fuel qualities.

The tractor is ready for exception type approval (national) and service back up by Valtra. Depending on the legislation in each country, registering the dual fuel tractor may require special approval, as common homologation regulations have not yet been agreed for dual fuel vehicles.
