Valtra Shell pulling team all set for new season

26.05.2004

The Valtra Shell pulling team starts the new season with the latest equipment and new team members.

Markku Lappalainen is now team manager, taking over from Arto Tiitinen. The team’s sponsorship line-up remains unchanged, consisting of Junkkari, Koneviesti, Loglift, Nordkalk, Mitron, Silja Line and Sisu Diesel.
The heart of the pulling team is the Valtra T190 tractor powered by a Sisu Diesel 7.4-litre ETA engine. Since last season, the engine’s intercooling and has been improved, and there are new fuel injectors. The transmission ratios have also been changed, and new tyres have been introduced after tests last season. The special pulling tractor boasts an output of around 2000 horsepower at 6000 rpm. The durability and reliability of the Sisu Diesel engine have also been improved.
“We have removed the head gasket and improved the engine’s lubrication system. The connecting rods are the same as on standard Sisu Diesel engines, except they are tempered. The transmission ratios have also been optimised, due to the changes in output and rpm. The new intercooler is considerably more powerful than before, and it is now located within the chassis. The better cooling allows us to increase the load on the engine. We have also increased the speed of the fuel injection, which allows us to increase the engine speed,” explains Mauno Ylivakeri, team engineer, at the season opener on 20 May.
A small but important detail is the new tyres. Last year’s tyres had a thinner outer layer, meaning that the centrifugal force was distributed to the tyre last efficiently. The new tyres are in effect larger than before when spinning due to the centrifugal force.
The main goal of the Valtra Shell pulling team this season is no less than to be on the podium in all the main Pro Stock events and, if possible, to take a one-two-three. Competition within Pro Stock continues to get tougher, which is good for the sport.
The team will participate this summer at various invitational events, in all Finnish Championship events, in the Euro Cup, and at the European Championships in Füchtorf, Germany at the beginning of September. The sport aims to attract as many spectators this summer as last year, over 150,000.
