Sisu Diesel achieves record production figure
19.01.2001During 2000 the Sisu Diesel factory in Nokia exceeded the target set in 1996, and produced well over 20,000th diesel engines. This marks a new record in production and indicates a continuation of the company´s strong growth throughout the 1990s. Indeed, output since the early ‘90s has more than quadrupled.
Sisu Diesel in Finland has also become increasingly international during the past ten years. Direct exports now total around 50 per cent of output and, if indirect exports are included, over 80 per cent of the company´s production is shipped to destinations outside Finland. In addition to Finland, Sisu Diesel has production facilities in Brazil which serves South America and many other countries in the Southern Hemisphere and has licensed production facilities in India supplying local markets.
Sisu Diesel’s Finnish engines have achieved a strong position as the source of power for agricultural tractors produced by many international manufacturers including Valtra, Massey Ferguson and Case Steyr. In recent years Sisu Diesel has introduced several new, innovative, products including the Valtra Sigma Power engine and the Sisu Diesel low-revs engine; the first of its kind in the world. The company has also developed the electronic engine monitoring system (EEM) which is used by Case Steyr in conjunction with its stepless CVT-gearbox.
Sisu Diesel and Valtra have a unique production system based on orders and delivery schedules from customers. This means that engine production is a genuine collaboration between customer and the engine assembler. Unusually, the same employee builds an engine from start to finish and their name is incorporated on the engine’s serial number plate.
Strong sales growth has encouraged the company to develop its manufacturing process considerably. During the past five years Sisu Diesel has invested almost FIM 100 million to increase production capacity and efficiency. It has also built approximately 2,000 square metres of new production space.
Additionally, Sisu Diesel is Finland´s leading producer of toothed gear wheels and gears components for vehicles. Sisu Diesel employs approximately 580 workers in Finland.
